To actively create a world for our children in which there is

  1. 1)a place for every belief system;

  2. 2)a recognition that different spiritual paths at their core share many similar values and principals;

  3. 3)an awareness that we are all bound together by the shared experience of being human.

Mission Statement

The film seeks to educate that the same core principals are found in all spiritual paths.  We are all essentially seeking the same truths, even if we practice no tradition at all.   In a world that appears to be divided by ideology and theology, the film intends to create an awareness of our similarities to foster unity and healing between groups as seemingly diverse as Fundamentalism and Progressive New Thought.   This film holds the idea that the human beings in any system of understanding are more important than the system itself, that people are more important than principals.  Once completed, the goal is to have the film screened in NY, aired on cable access and submitted to film festivals and PBS as we seek to secure grants and funding for a future full length documentary.

The project is inspired by the upcoming birth of the producer’s first child in August.  The question kept haunting him: “What kind of world do I want my child to grow up in?  And what can  I do to help create that world?”

The film is also inspired by those who dedicated their lives to awakening us to the truth that we are all one.  It will be in keeping with the values espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who said that "None of us are free until all of us are free"

and Mahatma Ghandi, who, when asked if he was a HIndu replied "Yes I am, I am also a Muslim, a Christian, a Buddhist, and a Jew."

The PBS mini-series  "The Power of Myth" of Bill Moyers interviewing Joseph Campbell will be used as a model for the kind of enlightening impact the film intends to have on the viewer.

Inspiration

The first stage of COMMON DENOMINATIONS will be to create a short 10-15 minute documentary interview style film.  It will include interviews of religious leaders from various traditions (Jewish, Sufi, Christian, Buddhist, Islam, etc) as well as possibly interviews of parents from different religious traditions with newborns or who are expecting a child.  All subjects will be asked the same set of questions.  Their answers will be edited together to examine their similarities.  Spliced between the interviews will be bites of images and quotes from famous spiritual leaders…Ghandi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus, Einstein, the Dalai Lama, etc, which demonstrate the universality of the spiritual quest.                                                     Donate here
